"Mar. 1912, Crowds visiting Elk at Wallowa. The scene at Wallowa was typical of stops near Baker and at La Grande, Elgin, Wallowa, Lostine and Enterprise. Schools were dismissed for a half-day to permit students to join the throngs viewing the big elk along their route of travel."
