"New Guinea Jungle - our first experience wth real jungle 17th Recon Sqdn" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Into the Tropic Jungle. On November 16, Hill's squadron boarded the Liberty ship SS John Steinmetz in Milne Bay and sailed north to Dobodura, which Allied forces had recaptured in late 1942. The airfield complex there, hacked out of jungle by engineers and Jauwa tribesmen, opened in November, 1942, during the battle of Buna and Gona. At the time of Hill's arrival, 'Dobo' -- the nickname for Dobodura -- had become a major Allied base for Fifth Air Force activities -- reconnaissance, combat, staging, storage and evacuation."
