Description

"The start of establishing the 17th tact. Recon Sqdn camp on Ie Shima" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Setting up on Ie Shima. Since AFPAC [U.S. Army Air Forces, Pacific] had agreed to perform the aerial photography needed by the ground troops for the Japanese campaign, movement of the 91st Reconnaissance Wing and its units into the Ryukyus was expedited in July and August. On July 29, Hill's Photo Section landed on this small island west of Okinawa, set up their tents just below one of the airstrips. As usual, they constructed their darkroom, dug their latrine halfway up the hill in the background, helped with building the mess hall. Day and night just overhead, the engines of bombers and fighters roared." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
