Description

"17th Tact. Recon Sqdn assembly for visit from Gen Whitehead to present medals to a number of recipients" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Brass Arrives. In spite of significant Japanese opposition, American forces established their Mindoro base. By the end of January, 1945, Fifth Air Force headquarters, the Commanding General, the 24th Division, and the 21st Infantry had all moved to San Jose. Tenth Corps assumed responsibility for the security of the island. Allied planes were now within easy striking distance of Japanese strongholds on Luzon and Corregidor. Here, Hill photographed Capt Peter S. Mousolite drilling the 17th Photo Squadron the day before Gen Ennis Whitehead's visit. Dressed in tropic suntan uniforms, the squadron improved their appearance the next day when the General arrived at McGuire Airdrome." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
