"Tollgate - circa 1905. 'Hotel' and original log house buildings - The gate, [for which the area was named] with a sign overhead listing toll rates, is at the left. The old log house by the gate was original log house on the place when Woodward acquired it in about 1875. Woodward built the water tank, milk house and frame 'hotel.' Mrs. David J. Woodward operated the Toll Gate after her husband disappeared in 1896. Four sons helped. She sold out in 1918."
