Cpl Al G. Merkling earned many pesos from flight crews for his fuselage paintings....The finished painting -- one of the most elaborate in the South Pacific -- appeared on a B-24 of the 90th Bomb Group identifiable here by its 'Jolly Roger' (skull and crossbones) logo. In all, Merkling embellished a dozen B-24 (F-7A's) as well as an A-20 and a couple of C-47 transports." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
