"Artist, Merkling, at work on what was to become 'Queen Mae' one of the outstanding nose art examples in the whole South Pacific" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Merkling and 'Queen Mae'. Cpl Al G. Merkling earned many pesos from flight crews for his fuselage paintings. Here, under a blistering sun, he rides his scaffold and sketches in the eyebrow of 'Queen Mae.'....In all, Merkling embellished a dozen B-24 (F-7A's) as well as an A-20 and a couple of C-47 transports."
