Description

"The all American past time - Baseball game on Mindoro, 17th Tactical Recon Sqdn both officers (pilots, crews) and EM rank seemed unimportant" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Softball Diamond at Dobodura. The American Red Cross provided athletic gear as well as musical instruments. During the weeks of December, the Army 'employed Papuan natives to clear more jungle areas, construct a grass-roofed Mess Hall and screened latrines, split log benches for a movie theater, erect medical and photo-processing shacks, and even complete a ball field. For their work, the natives wanted only small quantities of Doctor Shafer's peroxide to bleach their 'fuzzy wuzzy' hairdos." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
