Prior to Allied invasion on May 27 1944, Japanese forces constructed many defenses, such as this fortified cave in a coral wall. Hill himself may have seen this structure in the Ibdi Pocket area where there 'were 75 well-constructed log and coral pillboxes, each having a capacity of four men."
