"Carabao pulling a 'mud boat' to bring supplies from the street to our kitchen - Too muddy for our trucks" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Mud Boat Season. When deep mud made four-wheel-drive jeeps useless (background), many key places on Leyte became inaccessible. So, during the rainy season, U.S. forces hired Filipino carabao drivers with mud sleds to ferry all essentials -- food, mail, water, and other supplies -- from graveled main roads to such essential institutions as the Dulag mess hall." Animals
"Portrait of a Carabao near Ubistondo" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Carabao. As Hill wrote to Martha, 'Water buffalo are used for all farm power. They are called carabao by the people here. Those beasts please me immensely.' Slow, steady, and ubiquitous, Hill recalled that these large animals were docile when handled by their regular owners whom they recognized by the scent of coconut oil in their hair. To strangers whose scent they did not recognize, they were wary and potentially dangerous." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
