Painting nicknames, names and personalized icons on the fuselage was an unsanctioned but traditional art of Army Air Force crews. The motifs were varied and extensive -- tail fins with skull and crossbones, sides with female nudes, noses with sharks and other animals....Here, a famous B-25 displays both individual name and icon." "17th Recreational Musicians in the 'The Blue Room - Dan Klepner, Trumpet - John Caccitore - Edgar Vinyard" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Blue Room. Operated throughout the Pacific Theater by the Red Cross, this type of open-air canteen for enlisted men was staffed by volunteers - usually young women - who provided drinks, snacks, and musical instruments. During off hours, soldiers could come here to relax and socialize and listen and perhaps write letters. Without women, there was no dancing. Officers, meanwhile, were building a club of their own. Photo Lab crews working swing shift heard this music through the darkroom walls. Left to right: Unidentified lead singer / trombonist

Dobodura Camp, Tent Sign
Military camps
"Tent occupants! sign - Dobodura" Sign reads: "The Rainblows Inn - F/Sgt Rixham, T/Sgt Porreca, S/Sgt Lake, S/Sgt Baril" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Tent Frames and Fine Addresses. Before traditional planed lumber (dunnage) became available from ship packing and crating, soldiers built their tent walls and rafters from 'pono' wood poles cut from the nearby jungle. When laid as floors, 'pono' poles were so uneven that the men made three-legged tables and chairs in order to sit level. To enhance discovery, many of the men commissioned soldiers with painting skills to make address signs." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
