"Palm trees - Art Study at Milne Bay" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Coconut Palms, Milne Bay. Six miles wide and twenty miles long, Milne Bay was -- for Hill -- both a mud hole and a tropical paradise. White sand beaches, clear seas, blazing sunsets, nude natives, exotic birds, bizarre butterflies -- he recorded them all in his letters to Martha. To eliminate Japanese snipers in the area, many such coconut palms had been topped by the machine guns of Australian pilots." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

"Bathing Facilities - A shallow stream at Milne Bay - New Guinea" Ed Bernardo is looking back over his left shoulder as Dick Baxter sits in the water to his left. From "Darkroom Soldier": "Milne Bay Skinny Dippers. Small rivers and streams flowing through the west end of Milne Bay provided the only bathing and laundry facilities for Hill's camp. With temperatures in the nineties and humidity at one hundred percent, everyone valued cool, clean water." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

"Copy of the first view of New Guinea as the SS Gen John Pope arrived" From "Darkroom Soldier": "The Wharf of Milne Bay, November 4, 1943. Here, in August, 1942, an attack by Japanese naval forces had been repulsed by Australian infantry defending this twenty-mile long bay. When Hill arrived here, his Fifth Air Force contingent spearheaded Allied forces preparing to attack Japanese defensive positions along the New Guinea coast -- the first step in taking the battle to Japan. Because his camera was still in his baggage in the hold of the USS General John Pope, Hill salvaged this photograph by an anonymous photographer. Background: long low building among palms is the Red Cross Recreation Center." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

"The dock area at Milne Bay" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Milne Bay Wharf. Because there was no campsite for Hill's squadron when they arrived on November 4, and because commanders wanted to release the USS General John Pope to return to the States, Hill's squadron off-loaded their gear onto the Van Heust, a Dutch inter-island freighter. For two days, they lived on the ship and slept on the deck, then on November 6, 1943, they finally off-loaded onto this dock and went ashore to set up their quarters in the mud."
