"Thatched home of the Photo Crew of 3rd Attack Group - at river's edge, just below The Photo Lab. Dobodura is in the Buna and Gona villages on the N.E. coast of New Guinea" From "Darkroom Soldier": "3rd Attack Group Quarters. On the back of this photo, Hill told Martha, 'This is our home. Twenty of us sleep here. It's about twice as long as it is wide. Vines twining in the foreground are natural.' The photo also bears the censor's stamp, 'Passed by Army Examiner 19831." "Residence of the 3rd Attack Group Photo Section men including the 5 men of the 17th Recon "on loan" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Our House on Embi Creek. Located about thirty yards behind their Photo Lab, this typical native building -- post and beam, grass thatch roof -- felt like a luxurious home to soldiers of the two photo sections temporarily working together. The men could develop their film in nearby hot darkrooms, then enjoy a cool swim in Embi Creek. After Christmas, the17th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron planes and flight crews arrived at Dobodura, so Hill and the four other men left this site and returned to their own camp. In their absence, the farmed out men discovered that other crews -- mechanics, ordnance, medics, armamant -- had been ordered to construct tent frames for them. That service to tacit subordinates earned the photo lab men the nickname "The Nine Dollar Bills." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

"Binmaley (pronounced: Binmally). This is the home of Photo section men + Walt Peters - a medic. Rain water from one side of the tent kept the barrel full for showers!" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Camp at Binmaley. In a written memoir, Hill recalled his new quarters: 'On the central west coast of Luzon we built a splendid camp. The local Filipino craftsmen could build anything out of bamboo, and we each chipped in about $20 (six of us to a tent) to have a very comfortable tent frame and floor home constructed. By extending the side flaps and filling in the corners with issued ('shelter halves') we got a twenty-by-twenty foot domicile. From one side, the rain funneled into a fifty-five gallon drum on stilts, provided fresh water for a shower a day for each of us. For the most part, the same six men stayed together from camp to camp -- five photo lab men and a medic. When compatibility is found, it is well to maintain it, which we did."
