To remove an exposed roll of film and install a new roll in his Kodak 3-A, Sgt Powers crouches beside a Hollandia base road and manipulates both camera and film in a light tight bag -- a virtual field-expedient, portable darkroom." "IV. [No source is named for this chapter reference.] - Marble Flat Road, Grouse Creek or Marr Flat Road, summer of 1912, was the most direct route between Upper Imnaha and country on the plateau above. It takes travelers from the top of Marr Flat to the canyon on the long grade, easy as topography allows. Forest Service took the initiative in construction of the road, appropriating $1,000. The County furnished the remainder and expected to build other roads in the same manner."

Arnold, Bill
"In 1879 the Wallowa Canyon Road, or Smith Mountain Road, was built. The Bridge at Minam was a toll bridge. The stagecoach pictured and driven by Bill Arnold was possibly the last run of the coach on that road. The railroad had been built into Wallowa County and the services of the leather-springed stagecoach were no longer needed. There were more than 5,000 people living in Wallowa County at the time. The coach, here, is headed East, the year was 1908."
