"Japanese delegates transferring to US C-54 for trip on to Manila - No steps were available for C-54's on Ie Shima. Not a deliberate insult! From "Darkroom Soldier": "Awkward Climb to Peace. The airstrip at Ie Shima was not equipped to accommodate loading passengers in an Air Force Douglas C-54 four-engine transport, the plane in which the peace envoys would fly to Manila. After about fifteen minutes of incomprehensible discourse on the ground, the sixteen emissaries led by Lt Gen Torashiro Kawabe ascended an improvised boarding ladder -- an unintentional indignity. Two days later, the delegation returned to Ie Shima with the details worked out for the September 2 signing of surrender documents aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay." "Jap 'Betty' bomber on landing approach at Ie Shima" From "Darkroom Soldier": "First Betty Landing. Recalling this day, Hill wrote, 'While we were on Ie Shima, General MacArthur ordered that a contingent of Japanese diplomats go to Manila to make the preliminary arrangements for the surrender to take place on the Missouri battleship in Tokyo Bay. Two Japanese Mitsubishi 'Betty' bombers were to be painted white with huge green crosses on wing tip and fuselage. These two planes were escorted to the landing strip on Ie Shima by our P-38's and B-25's. I was able to get photographs of these planes. The Japanese envoys were transferred to one of our big C-54's for the long flight to Manila." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
