"The canoes that came out to welcome us as we arrived at Tacloban Leyte Oct 28 1944" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Invading Leyte. On October 20, 1944, four divisions of the U.S. Sixth Army, including the XXIV Corps from the Central Pacific, invaded Leyte. At Tacloban, on October 24, Gen MacArthur kept his promise to 'return to the Philippines' by ceremonially restoring 'Philippines Civil Government under President Sergio Osmena.' When the SS Juan Cabrillo arrived in the bay off Tacloban on October 28, the ship learned there was no space to unload at the wharf, so they dropped anchor. To greet the soldiers, local Filipino men and a beautiful girl paddled out to the waiting ship. While the girl sang her welcome song, the men in their outrigger canoes traded bananas, sugar cane, pottery, and woven mats for the soldiers' clothing, soap, and cigarettes."
