"Humbolt Bay Local Homes" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Native Homes, Humboldt Bay. Hill and two other Photo Section men persuaded an officer on the Russell Sage that they needed to document 'squadron history.' Accepting this ruse, the captain allowed the three photographers to go ashore with the 'Pig Boat' -- a motorized launch used to ferry men and supplies between ship and shore. On one of those trips, the photographers persuaded the 'Pig Boat' skipper to drive close to these native homes. Perched on piling and scaffold above the salt water, this architecture protected coastal native peoples from hostile interior tribes and gave easy access to their fleet of dugout canoes used for traveling, fishing, and trading." "Assembly of Native leaders all in feather head dresses kneeling - for a group portrait Papua New Guinea Chief participants in big 'Sing Sing' in the area of Dobodura - New Guinea in their tribal finery feather head dresses" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Sing-Sing Dancers. Tribesmen and one woman (far left) in festive attire kneel with their drums during a New Year sing-sing. To enjoy a feast, to celebrate a marriage, to honor good luck, or to recognize success, tribes throughout New Guinea gathered in this manner to sing, dance, and feast. Throughout the war, these tribesmen, referred to affectionately by the Australian forces as "Fuzzy Wuzzies," befriended the Allies. Mostly, they served as packers carrying food and ammunition to infantry fighting in the jungle, then as stretcher bearers bringing wounded soldiers back from the front."
