En route to Vigan, Hill admired both Filipino ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit at the Alba River crossing, where the bridge across the river had been destroyed by the retreating Japanese. As he told Martha, 'Filipinos had built bamboo rafts with fifty-five gallon drums attached, and they poled those rafts like ferries across the river."
