Because photo recon men were in short supply at Dobodura, Hill's entire darkroom unit was split up and farmed out: most were assigned to the 26th Bomb Group
four men and Hill were assigned to the 3rd Attack Group....For almost a month, the combined unit shown here processed aerial images for the December 26 Cape Gloucester landing on New Britain. Description
An account of the resource
"Residence of the 3rd Attack Group Photo Section men including the 5 men of the 17th Recon "on loan" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Our House on Embi Creek. Located about thirty yards behind their Photo Lab, this typical native building -- post and beam, grass thatch roof -- felt like a luxurious home to soldiers of the two photo sections temporarily working together. The men could develop their film in nearby hot darkrooms, then enjoy a cool swim in Embi Creek. After Christmas, the17th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron planes and flight crews arrived at Dobodura, so Hill and the four other men left this site and returned to their own camp. In their absence, the farmed out men discovered that other crews -- mechanics, ordnance, medics, armamant -- had been ordered to construct tent frames for them. That service to tacit subordinates earned the photo lab men the nickname "The Nine Dollar Bills." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

"Native homes on stilts over the water. Outrigger canoe with at least 10 people going by" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Homes at Parai. 'Off limits' for soldiers, Hill and Casey hitchhiked down the coast to Parai on August 23. In his letter, Hill described the village: 'The huts are built on pilings out from the base of the cliff a hundred feet or so. Walkways connect most of the houses. Palm trees grow between the ridge and the huts....' The men photographed two types of traditional houses: 'rum som, a house of blood relatives... occupied by parents (Father and Mother) and their son who was married
rum sram, a youth house...occupied by young men [and]...used...as a traditional educational centre...for [learning] warfare, hunting, fishing, gardening, etc.' At one house, Hill photographed an enterprising native woman drying GI laundry on a hand railing."
