"Tent mates pose on fox hole cover. Van Reimer, Dick Baxter, Al Countryman, Walt Peters, Fred Hill, and Ed Bernardo in front." All Photo section men except Peters who was a medic" From "Darkroom Soldier": "On the Foxhole at Dulag. After a few days and nights of unloading at Tacloban, the 17th Photo Section moved twenty miles south down Highway 1 to Dulag on Leyte Gulf. Building their photo lab closer to the front lines than ever before, Hill recalled regular night bombings by Japanese planes and anti-aircraft guns firing all around their camp. When those guns were firing, deadly chunks of searing shrapnel could fall right through their tent canvas. To take refuge from the friendly shrapnel and unfriendly bombs, the Photo Section hired local Filipinos to dig them a spacious foxhole. Here, they pose on that log and dirt shelter. Left to right: Sgt Van Reimer, Cpl Dick Baxter, Pfc A.J. Countryman, Pfc Walt Peters (medic), Sgt Fred Hill, Sgt Ed Bernardo." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
