USS General John Pope
Naval ships
"The Troop Transport the USS Gen. John Pope which carried the 17th ground personnel and Many others from New Port News Virginia to Milne Bay New Guinea" From "Darkroom Soldier": "The USS General John Pope (AP-110). The ship, named after Civil War general and Indian fighter John Pope, was launched at Kearny, New Jersey on March 21, 1943, and later ferried Fred Hill and other military personnel for nearly six weeks from Norfolk, Virginia, to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia -- via the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, and across the Pacific Ocean. En route to Queensland, the crew 'celebrated' crossing the equator, a rite of passage which Hill describes in one of his letters to his wife, Martha."
