"The Troop Transport the USS Gen. The ship, named after Civil War general and Indian fighter John Pope, was launched at Kearny, New Jersey on March 21, 1943, and later ferried Fred Hill and other military personnel for nearly six weeks from Norfolk, Virginia, to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia -- via the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, and across the Pacific Ocean.
