"Soldier reading on deck of LST 626, Dec 1944" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Reading Onboard. Crossing the Pacific, soldiers frequently had hours and hours to spend on deck at ease. As pictured here on another ship a year later, Hill and his fellow soldiers passed many pleasant hours of smooth sailing by reading -- books, magazines, letters, newspapers from home -- while keeping their life jackets close by." From "Darkroom Soldier": "Leaving Biak. As combat moved north to reconquer the Philippines, the demand for timely aerial reconnaissance followed. So, on October 21, 1944, Hill's unit left Biak on the SS Juan Cabrillo, a Liberty Ship launched on June 30, 1942, (Hull #291) and named for the Spanish explorer who discovered California. "Supplies being hoisted aboard SS Russell Sage in Humboldt Bay" "SS Russell Sage left Finschhafen 6/30 - arrived Biak July 28, 44 - spent over 3 weeks anchored in Humboldt Bay" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Food Arrives. The SS Russell Sage had been stocked with rations for four days -- the expected time to travel to Biak. After anchoring, HIll reported that 'our officers [went] ashore to see what the small detachment at Hollandia could spare in the line of food. Captured Japanese rice and sardines...was all that could be spared.... 'For two days,' Hill notes, 'we had sardines for breakfast, sardines and rice for lunch, and rice and sardines for supper.' Eventually, supplies were flown into Hollandia airstrip, then transferred to the Russell Sage by an infantry landing craft. Here, Hill records the food being hoisted aboard in a cargo sling under the watchful eyes of hungry men." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

Description
An account of the resource
"Liberty Ship as seen from aboard another Liberty Ship" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Liberty Ship on Humboldt Bay. On May 25, 1944, as part of the overall Allied movement up the New Guinea coast, an advance echelon of Hill's 17th Squadron moved to Wakde Island. There, they were to give air support to landings on Biak, a strategically located island off the north coast of Dutch New Guinea. Intending to build an air base on Biak in order to carry the war north to the Philippines, Army forces landed there on May 27, but encountered significant Japaneses resistance. When the Japanese sent a convoy to reinforce Biak, Hill's commanding officer, Major William Tennille, his crew, and two other B-25 pilots and crews died on June 8, while sinking four Japanese destroyers. On June 30, 1944, Hill's rear echelon contingent boarded the Liberty Ship SS Russell Sage for Biak. En route to Wakde Island, the news came that infantry were still fighting Japanese in Biak's caves and pockets, and the Mokmer airfield on Biak had not been secured. So, the Russell Sage was ordered to anchor in Humboldt Bay, a secure area off Hollandia." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
