An account of the resource
"Low level view of conference table in Priest's area at the big Catholic Church in (blank) Note legs are on a plank all around chairs must straddle" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Detail: Nara Wood Table. Calasiao church wardens gave Hill a tour of the pastoral living quarters and the old Spanish kitchen. He was fascinated by the carved legs of a nara wood table. 'Takes twenty men to carry it,' he wrote. A month later, still intrigued by the table -- the top so polished that it reflected light -- he hitchhiked back to Calasiao to take closeups: 'Light on the table comes from a north window so it is always good and constant. Made seven exposures with and without a red filter from four different positions." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)

Description
An account of the resource
"A big Catholic Church at Binmaley (Lingayen Gulf) was used by the Japanese to store munitions. It was shelled by US Navy ships in the Gulf. These statues were salvaged by local parishioners and assembled in a corner." From "Darkroom Soldier": "Cathedral Tableau. The largest church in the province and visible for miles offshore, Binmaley Cathedral attracted Hill's attention. After Army intelligence had determined that the Japanese were storing supplies and munitions in this sanctuary, Navy warships reportedly shelled the building. Dissatisfied with photos from his visit to the cathedral, he described the image he wanted to capture: 'In one corner were about a dozen figures of Biblical characters that had been salvaged from the altars and huddled together. Figures about three feet high. There is a statue of the Virgin with Baby. Will take strong afternoon light to get it.' A week later, Hill returned to the cathedral to find 'the sky got just right for a picture I've been waiting a week to take.... Inside, I shot through a huge shell hole in the roof at the bell tower with a blue sky background. Tried the figure of the Virgin holding a headless Christ child, but it is in the most difficult position -- for light and background -- of any object I've ever tried to shoot." An account of the resource
"Interior of a smaller Catholic Church toward San Carlos from Binmale. GALA ANACO A-ALAGDENTACA" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Interior: Calasiao Cathedral. After being granted permission, Hill ascended the choir loft for this photograph. 'Whew!' he wrote: 'Beat St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. In very excellent repair. Built in 1547. The high ceiling was covered with mud dauber nests and the swallows were flying around inside. There were prayer candles burning and a little old lady in black with a white lace handkerchief atop her head was kneeling at the center altar. The little lady was perfectly still. The illumination was excellent. Very even, though quite dim. As long as it's even, the actual quantity of light is not too important." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
