"Native homes on stilts over the water. Outrigger canoe with at least 10 people going by" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Homes at Parai. 'Off limits' for soldiers, Hill and Casey hitchhiked down the coast to Parai on August 23. In his letter, Hill described the village: 'The huts are built on pilings out from the base of the cliff a hundred feet or so. Walkways connect most of the houses. Palm trees grow between the ridge and the huts....' The men photographed two types of traditional houses: 'rum som, a house of blood relatives... occupied by parents (Father and Mother) and their son who was married
rum sram, a youth house...occupied by young men [and]...used...as a traditional educational centre...for [learning] warfare, hunting, fishing, gardening, etc.' At one house, Hill photographed an enterprising native woman drying GI laundry on a hand railing." "Two Liberty Ships and an LC1 behind a native large canoe with a sail, at Biak" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Boat Antithesis. Stabilized by outrigger, assisted by sail, four Biak men paddle their large wood canoe on Soenggarai Bay. Praised for their first-class seamanship, these Biak natives may be traveling here by wai mansusu (a battle canoe) or by wai ron (a trading canoe). Hill wrote Martha that 'still cameras can't show the slow rhythmic grace of the great canoes as they move around.' In the background, a diesel-fired Liberty Ship rides at anchor." "Humbolt Bay Local Homes" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Native Homes, Humboldt Bay. Hill and two other Photo Section men persuaded an officer on the Russell Sage that they needed to document 'squadron history.' Accepting this ruse, the captain allowed the three photographers to go ashore with the 'Pig Boat' -- a motorized launch used to ferry men and supplies between ship and shore. On one of those trips, the photographers persuaded the 'Pig Boat' skipper to drive close to these native homes. Perched on piling and scaffold above the salt water, this architecture protected coastal native peoples from hostile interior tribes and gave easy access to their fleet of dugout canoes used for traveling, fishing, and trading." "The canoes that came out to welcome us as we arrived at Tacloban Leyte Oct 28 1944" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Invading Leyte. On October 20, 1944, four divisions of the U.S. Sixth Army, including the XXIV Corps from the Central Pacific, invaded Leyte. At Tacloban, on October 24, Gen MacArthur kept his promise to 'return to the Philippines' by ceremonially restoring 'Philippines Civil Government under President Sergio Osmena.' When the SS Juan Cabrillo arrived in the bay off Tacloban on October 28, the ship learned there was no space to unload at the wharf, so they dropped anchor. To greet the soldiers, local Filipino men and a beautiful girl paddled out to the waiting ship. While the girl sang her welcome song, the men in their outrigger canoes traded bananas, sugar cane, pottery, and woven mats for the soldiers' clothing, soap, and cigarettes."
