"Monday, September 20, 1908 was a big day at Wallowa City. The first train to ever enter the city made the run from Elgin that day and marked a milestone in the development of Wallowa County. Up to this time people from the Wallowa valley were compelled to use Elgin as a freight and passenger terminal. The daily train schedule to Wallowa was announced with the train to arrive at 12:20 p.m. and leave for its return trip to Elgin at 1:45 p.m. The public was invited to bring their picnic baskets and cups (Wallowa would furnish the coffee) for the big day. As the excursion train let off steam in the yards at Wallowa, people overflowed the cars and many men and boys stood atop the box cars. A big celebration was held, and soon work began on the completion of the railroad to Joseph."
