"At the area down stream from the destroyed bridge - Rafts of large bamboo and empty 55 gal. drums floated even 6 x 6 trucks across - poled by Filipino men" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Crossing the Alba River. En route to Vigan, Hill admired both Filipino ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit at the Alba River crossing, where the bridge across the river had been destroyed by the retreating Japanese. As he told Martha, 'Filipinos had built bamboo rafts with fifty-five gallon drums attached, and they poled those rafts like ferries across the river." Countryman, Bernardo and Reimer write letters in their 20' x 20' Binmaley home. By this point, as Hill wrote to Martha, 'Every stick of bamboo in our tent has begun to mildew.' The floor was constructed of bamboo slats, while the inner ceiling was formed by a discarded silk parachute." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn) The person seated on the right in this image has been identified as Van Reimer, and also as Fred Hill. "Hand carved bamboo comb - a tourist trade item - perhaps actually used by local people. Called a supwac" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Papuan Supwac. Hill brought home this typical hand-carved comb for which he traded two flashlight batteries. He later bought three similar combs for four shillings -- Australian currency. Hill noted that native men and women alike owned such combs." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
