Description
An account of the resource
"McGuire Airdrome overview of Mindoro air strip facilities" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Invading Mindoro. Moving north from Leyte to establish airfields closer to Manila and Luzon, the Allies chose to invade Mindoro, a mountainous, oval-shaped island, seventh largest in the Philippines. On December 15, 1944, the invading 3rd Battalion of the 503rd Parachute Infantry drove unopposed eight miles inland, secured the airstrip, Mindoro Sugar Company plant, and village of San Jose without casualties. By January 7, 1945, when Hill's Photo Section debarked from LST-626, Mindoro seemed relatively safe, though it was only about 150 miles from Japanese airfields around Manila. At San Jose, Hill photographed McGuire Airdrome, his unit's new base on Mindoro Strait, and the parked B-25's of his 17th Reconnaissance Squadron. Tons of crushed white coral pave the roads, taxi strips, hard stands and runways. They would build their new photo lab and living quarters in a cornfield out of the picture on the lower right." Description
An account of the resource
"Sgt Earl E. Powers, former Photo Section member who became a Photo-gunner in a combat crew" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Photo Gunners. Two men in Hill's Photo Reconnaissance section, his friends Sgt Earl Powers (above) and Sgt Bob Casey, moved up the pay and death risk scales by becoming 'photo gunners' -- the men on combat air crews who operated reconnaissance cameras and -- if necessary -- machine guns. As Hill wrote to Martha, these new photo gunners would be 'eligible for Staff Sergeant, in line for Tech Sergeant, and on flying status, which will add up to about $200 a month' additional income. Hill later reported that 'Casey is gone now most of the time. Suppose he'll gradually drift away, as socially, the gunners are quite a clique. He may even move in with other combat crewmen next time we set up camp.' In another report, he noted that 'Bob has been working with the ordnance boys all day long again today. Familiarizing himself with the entire set-up -- loading, threading, cleaning, servicing machine guns.' Both men survived the war." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
