"Ground level Photo. Damaged City Buildings - South of Pasig River. Manila Bay in greater distance. Oro Theare and next block over" From "Darkroom Soldier": "Dueling Artillery Damage. On February 1, the Allies began the attack on Manila. Eventually, Allied forces captured 'the areas north of the Pasig River which divided Manila...[while] the Japanese navy commander whose troops controlled the area [south of the river] decided to hold out and entrenched themselves against the American advance.' Day and night, that standoff led to 'artillery exchanges between Japanese in the south and Americans in the north.' Here, a photographer in the 49th Fighter Group documented some of the damage caused by Japanese artillery firing on Allied positions north of the Pasig: Oro Theater (burned top) and Monte de Piedad (arch intact). When Hill's Photo Section developed these images, they saved prints for themselves." ("Darkroom Soldier" caption authored by George Venn)
