"La Grande (Union County) - September 22-23, 1902. A balloon ascension, in connection with the County Fair in 1902 brought out the people from miles around the Grande Ronde Valley and from Wallowa County as well. Here, a large crowd is gathered around the launching of the hot air balloon. In the background, a billboard advertises "Cyrus Noble Whiskey - Pure, Old, Honest," and to the right of the billboard is the "Bolton and Bodmer Hardware & Agriculture Implements" store.

Six, unidentified men stand in front of the toll gate for which the area was named. Written on sign above gate: "Woodward Wagon Road Co." and the various "Toll Rates." Written on sign to the right: "Beckwith Motor Co. - Chalmers, Moon and Apperson Cars - Winther Trucks - [on] Alder St. [in] Walla Walla, Wash." Also advertised: "Meals, oil cans [and] tobacco." Information included with photograph: "The toll gate stood where the dam i[s] now located. Stock pens were situated at the top of the little rise. The tree at the forks of the road stands today, a much taller tree but definitely the same one."
